This type of bearing is suitable for low- or medium speed applications which involve heavy or impact loading. Each type can be produced with a cylindrical bore or tapered bore.Bearings with a tapered bore can be fit and removed easily using an adapter assembly or withdrawal sleeve. Tapered bearing and race technology is over 100 years old.Flag this photoTrailer wheel bearings use cage and race technology. This technology is over 100 years old. The bearings are hardened, tapered and are a roller type. They seat into a tapered, hardened race and are lubricated with a heavy grease, with seals to keep the lube in place. If the bearing fails, it is replaced along with its accompanying race. Assembly is a matter of keeping things clean and orderly.Related Searches: Things You'll NeedJackJack standsHammerDrift ortaper roller bearing punchFlat head screwdriverSide cuttersSuggest Edits1Jack the trailer up, place jack stands under the frame and lower the trailer. Disassemble the trailer bearing assembly by removing the tire, then with a flat head screwdriver and hammer, lightly tap around the dust cap that protects the outer bearing. Continue tapping around the cap until it loosens and can be easily removed.2Remove the cotter pin with side cutters, then loosen and remove the castle nut. Slip the hub slightly forward and remove the flat washer and outer bearing. Remove the hub. On the backside of the hub is a metal clad seal. Insert a long punch or drift through the hub and from the backside, drive the seal out. The back bearing will follow.3Use the long punch and drive out one race from the backside, then drive out the other race from the other side. Clean the hub with solvent for reassembly.4Lubricate two new races for assembly. Position the race in the opening. Lay a steel flat-bar across the race to equally distribute a hammer blow. This will start the race evenly into the opening. Drive the race into the opening until it is flush. With the punch, walk around the race, lightly tapping until it fully seats. Inspect the lower seat area for gaps. The sound of the hammer blow will change when it is seated. Repeat this process for the other side.5Pack the new wheel bearings with premium grease. Place a small amount of lube on the heel of one hand and, with the other, walk the bearing around while tapping it into the grease. Do this for both bearings. Place grease on both new races.6Install the rear bearing and install a new metal-clad seal. Lightly tap the seal into place, being careful not to cock it in the opening. Slip the hub onto the spindle. Install the outer bearing, the washer and hand-tighten the castle nut.7Hand-tighten the castle nut. Spin the hub and hand-tighten it again. Install a new cotter pin then the dust cover. Lightly tap the cover into place, being careful not to cock it. Walk a hammer nachi bearingsaround the lip and go from side to side to start the cap evenly. wgBN2DV7VU
